The Grounds Announced by Carter and Front Street Capital

ByRebecca September 16, 2024September 16, 2024
The Grounds, a mixed-use entertainment destination.
The Grounds

Carter and Front Street Capital, in collaboration with the City of Winston-Salem and Wake Forest University, have unveiled plans for The Grounds. This expansive 100-acre mixed-use development is set to house retail, dining, residential, and office spaces, creating a dynamic community hub. The goal is to enhance Winston-Salem’s landscape and reinforce its position as a top-tier sports and entertainment destination.

Nestled around key venues, such as the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium, David F. Couch Ballpark, Wake Forest Tennis Center, and Winston-Salem Fairgrounds and Arena, The Grounds intends to be a year-round focal point for the wider Winston-Salem community. It will boast a variety of food and beverage options, gathering spaces, activities, walking trails, and innovative residences.

Mayor Allen Joines shared his enthusiasm for the project stating, “The plans for this project are more than just renderings and drawings; they are a road map to a new era of vibrancy and opportunity for our city. The Grounds represents another key step in the growing momentum in this strategic and critical portion of our city, building on the successful rebirth of Whitaker Park and the expansion of the Senior Services Center. I am excited to see this redevelopment emerge as part of this thriving corridor and as a cornerstone of our city’s future.”

Project Details

Carter and Front Street Capital will officially break-ground on the first phase of the project in December, which will include:

* A pedestrian-friendly retail village will be built, featuring a central lawn next to a new Deacon Walk, which will serve as an entrance to the Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium. The village, covering more than 40,000 square feet, will include locally and regionally renowned chef-driven restaurants, boutique shops, integrated patios, and plenty of outdoor community gathering spaces. Additionally, loft-style residential units will be located above the retail buildings, adding density and activity to the central plaza area.

* A 240-unit Residential Community will feature elevated amenities, green-space views, and pedestrian access to the retail village.

* A 100 sq. ft. office building

* Infrastructure improvements utilizing a $35 million grant allocated by the state of North Carolina include road improvements and the construction of a paved-landscaped walking trail, providing pedestrian connectivity throughout The Grounds.

Excitement For The Future

Adam Parker, Vice President at Atlanta based Carter shared his thoughts on this trans-formative development stating, “Carter and Front Street Capital are two companies with deep ties to Winston-Salem and we are thrilled to be part of the City’s next chapter. The support of the City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, the State of North Carolina, and Wake Forest University has provided The Grounds a foundation for future success.”.
