211 - 213 South Main Street Redevelopment building.

City of Lexington to Host Open House for 211 – 213 South Main

The City of Lexington has issued a press release announcing the availability of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a historic site located in the center of Uptown Lexington. They invite anyone with an interest to join an Open House focused on the redevelopment of 211-213 South Main Street. This event is scheduled for July 15th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the property itself. The Request For Proposal seeks proposals for transforming this space into a mixed-use development that revitalizes South Main while respecting the area’s architectural heritage. Tammy Absher, the Director of Business and Community Development, shared her enthusiasm for the RFP, stating, “”Our RFP process encourages developers to be creative in preparing and submitting plans that they believe would represent the best use of the property. We’re excited about the wide scope of potential ideas and look forward to a partnership that furthers Uptown’s vision as a destination to work, live and play.” The press release clarifies that this is “not a formal bidding process, and the city is not seeking bids, but is rather looking for ideas and plans for consideration.”

Some Backstory on 211 – 213 South Main Street

The building spans approximately 8,260 square feet and has hosted a variety of businesses over the years, including consignment shops, boutiques, salons, and more. In 2008, it was donated to the city of Lexington, which utilized part of the first floor to expand the Smith Civic Center facilities. Now, the city aims to repurpose 211 – 213 South Main Street as part of a broader initiative to promote upper-story residential use, while also enhancing the economic vitality and ongoing transformation of downtown Lexington.

Proposal Deadline

Proposals for 211 – 213 South Main Street are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1st. If you would like more information about the request for proposals and submission instructions, please visit www.lexingtonnc.gov/rfp.
